Edukasyon.ph spins off globalizing tutorial service

Updated: Jan 26

MANILA -Education technology (edtech) platform Edukasyon.ph has announced the spinoff of Edge Tutor International, a startup online tutorial service that has expanded its footprint to multiple overseas markets.

Edukasyon.ph’s French-Filipino founder Henry Motte-Muñoz will serve as the CEO of Edge Tutor, bringing his solid track record in the edtech industry, with the full support of Edukasyon.ph’s investors.

Edge Tutor was launched by Edukasyon.ph in early 2022 to offer online tutoring in English and Math for K to 12 learners, with the goal of addressing the learning gap experienced by students in the Philippines.

Later in 2022, faced with growing international demand for its services, Edge Tutor started training professional educators to provide additional 24/7 teacher support to different tutoring businesses in different parts of the globe. Since then, Edge Tutor has expanded to 20 countries across the Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific, and has been growing 50 percent quarter on quarter.

Motte-Muñoz, a Harvard graduate formerly with Goldman Sachs and Bain Capital, served as the CEO of Edukasyon.ph from 2015 to 2020. Under his leadership, the platform has become one of the leading online education platforms in the Philippines, connecting millions of students every year to education opportunities.

“We are excited to announce the spinoff of Edge Tutor International and appoint Henry Motte-Muñoz as its new CEO,” said Grace David, CEO of Edukasyon.ph. “We are confident that, under his leadership, Edge Tutor International will continue to grow and provide high-quality tutoring services to learners around the world.”

Spinoff refers to the creation of an independent new entity with the expectation that this new unit will be more lucrative as a standalone business. In this case, Edge Tutor has shown its potential to be a global enterprise.

As the CEO of Edge Tutor, Motte-Muñoz aims to forming an entire roster of Filipino teachers who will provide world-class education to Filipino and international learners and clients.

“Helping learners achieve their full potential through education has always been our vision,” Motte-Muñoz said. “Edge Tutor supplements the learning that Edukasyon.ph has provided for almost a decade now, and we are excited to build this community of educators together.”

Joining Motte-Muñoz in the leadership of Edge Tutor International are seasoned professionals with a collective experience of four decades in recruiting, training, managing and developing online teachers from the Philippines into world-class teachers.

Edge Tutor vice president of operations Cecilia Calvo-Lewis said the success of Edge Tutor was anchored in the community of highly-skilled teachers across the country. “Despite working remotely, our seasoned team has fostered a sense of belonging and support,” Calvo-Lewis said. “In partnership with the world’s most trusted names in online learning, Edge Tutor can provide career opportunities for teachers to connect with one another, share teaching tips, and receive feedback. This community drives our sense of purpose to be relentless in our pursuit for the most effective way to learn.”

Edge Tutor has currently trained over 1,000 licensed teachers on “evidence-based methodology and strategies for online teaching.” These teachers are handpicked and undergo rigorous screening where only 3 percent of applicants are accepted. All teachers are licensed and attend regular training to ensure they are constantly upskilling.
